San Josecito & Corcovado National Park

Before sunrise about eighteen enthusiastic birdwatchers went ashore with Greivin and Deybis for the first adventure of the day. Despite being on a tropical beach, the air was cooler than usual and the morning moon hid behind the clouds like a small sun. It was a magical moment with the sounds of the waves, the songs of the birds and the wind blowing through the trees playing their own tune. The birdwatching was magnificent: tanagers, toucans, warblers, flycatchers, and caracaras welcomed the day with their songs. We returned to the ship for breakfast and after taking it we disembarked one more time on San Josecito beach where we separated in three groups. Some of us continued birdwatching while others took a longer hike into Rio Claro, and the more adventurous went horseback riding or swimming.

After lunch the ship was repositioned off the shore of Corcovado, one of Costa Rica’s most pristine and inaccessible park, the same one that years ago was described in National Geographic as one of the most intensely biodiverse regions of the earth. There, we took walks through the old growth forests and marveled at the perfect balance of nature. By sunset we went back to the ship having fulfilled what for so many people is the dream of a lifetime.
