Corcovado National Park & Caletas Wildlife Refuge

Sun rises with a warm tone of freshness and all of us are ready on board the Sea Voyager to explore a unique region. Home of the largest biodiversity in Costa Rica and clearly for the most of the international scientific community… the Osa Peninsula is located at Southern Pacific coast.

Our activities started with a nature walk along the trails of Caletas Wildlife Refuge. This privately owned protected area consists in one of the many efforts to preserve these fragile natural resources. The trails are easy walking and we had the opportunity to see and discover the secrets of some of the more than 1800 species of plants and trees.
For those who wanted to explore further away, several horses took us along the pristine beaches. When we were returning a big troop of white-faced capucin monkeys made a delightful exhibition of their climbing skills and their interesting and complex social behavior.

In the afternoon the tide rose and after a few minutes of navigation some dolphins were bow riding as inseparable companions. We anchored in front of the San Pedrillo River to begin the exploration of the different treasures of one of the most important National Parks of Costa Rica: Corcovado.

This amazing protected area is considered the most biologically intense place on Earth, hosting one of the largest concentrations of threatened species of the tropical rain forest in the New World. Just being there inspires any person to think about the need to protect this environment.

The strangler trees above 100 feet are breathtaking and provide us the chance to explain one of the most interesting relationships of the forest. Leaf cutter ants carrying thousands of vegetal pieces to feed their colony and a curious, patient and gracious white-nosed coati looking for food made us understand how this habitat is amazingly self-sufficient.

To finish the journey, many took a refreshing dip in the river to cool the tropical heat after taking a look at the waterfall. The cascade transmits energy, respect and admiration to the power of nature, giving us peace, unique inspiration and strength.
