Coiba Island National Park & Granito de Oro, Panama
The sunrise was spectacular as the Sea Voyager made her way to the small isolated island, Granito de Oro, or “Little Grain of Gold”. This beautiful island with its white sandy beach, is home to thousands of hermit crabs and we dropped our packs under the single palm tree and headed into the warm ocean. The island is surrounded by a rocky reef which is home to over 69 species of fish and we found the snorkeling fantastic. We saw colorful angelfish, polka dot guineafowl puffers, white tipped sharks, and porcupine fish, just to name a few.
We repositioned to the main island, Coiba, which has an interesting history. In 1919 a penal colony was established on the island. This helped to preserve the island, keeping developers away and in 2004 it was declared a National Park. Two years ago, UNESCO turned it into a Nature World Heritage Site.
We had a wonderful BBQ lunch prepared for us by the galley. Afterwards, the guests engaged in a variety of activities. Some went on a bird watching walk, others kayaked, some swam, and others relaxed in the shade and watched an exciting soccer game being played on the beach. A great time was had by all, in this sunny, tropical paradise.
