Manuel Antonio National Park
I really believe that our guests were feeling a bit gloomy this morning since they realized our day at this magnificent park inevitably marked the end of our expedition on board the Sea Voyager. Nevertheless, we can proudly say that everyone was enthusiastic and full of renovated energy to commence a fascinating day of exploration in Manuel Antonio. Manuel Antonio National Park is perhaps the most visited park in Costa Rica. The scenic Punta Catedral was once an island off the coast. Over the years, sedimentation filled in a bar of sand, connecting it to the mainland. Scientists call this stretch of white sand beach “Tombolo”. The volcanic-sedimentary cliffs rise steeply from the shoreline, providing attractive vistas and hiking trails. The forested hillsides are home to many of the animals, plants and flowers that are Costa Rica's unique attractions: monkeys, sloths, iguanas, toucans and many more individual species.
Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer, whose unsuccessful search for the Fountain of Youth became his signature expedition, is rarely recognized for one of his greatest discoveries, Quepos and Manuel Antonio, which he put on the charts in 1519. Somehow, perhaps, the real Fountain Youth was in this area after all but the Costarrican people have been keeping the secret selfishly since then!
As we could expect, right after a luscious breakfast on board the ship, our young explorers adventured inland for the different trails of the park. One more very wet landing announced the beginning of another day in paradise for our willing guests. Spectacular flora and fauna, white sand beaches and the intimacy of mother nature, showed the path to our expedition partakers.
All too soon it was time to come back on board and enjoy the soothing warmth of the sun over the emerald green forest and the endless sea. We really hope to see you back in our countries one day, and then we will celebrate life once again surrounded by vibrant conversation, awesome sunsets and never-ending friendships. Buen viaje mis amigos y pronto regreso al hogar!
