Playa Caletas & Corcovado National Park

The soothing but importunate rain did not intimidate our fearless group of bird watchers who woke up with the first glimmer of a new day at the rainforest of Costa Rica. Corcovado survived the stormy night just to reveal renovated nature in every rain drop clinging from the leaves. Raincoats and jackets were put away soon as the bright tropical sun filled the air. In every corner we could breathe the fresh aroma of the monsoon that dampened the forest throughout the night, like so many times before since the creation of these realms.

After an eagerly expected breakfast, our guests left the Sea Voyager to set foot in one of the many private reserves found in Costa Rica. In fact, Playa Caletas is considered by the experts as a vital “buffer zone” for Corcovado National Park. The guests enjoyed birding, horseback riding and swimming, while our galley prepared a sensational BBQ that attracted both people and monkeys at the same time. Fortunately our not so far away relatives, the capuchin monkeys, were not as enthusiastic about cheeseburgers as our guests.

We had great chances to observe several monkeys carrying babies, as well as colorful birds such as the slaty-tailed trogon that was in charge of the welcome to the site with its melodious calls from above the canopy.

Once back on board, we repositioned the vessel in front of San Pedrillo Station, right in the core of famous Corcovado National Park. In 1975, with an assisted land acquisition of 86,485 acres, the Conservancy helped the Costa Rican government create the more than 100,000-acre Corcovado National Park on the western part of the peninsula.

Our guests got off with high expectations about the hidden wonders of this magnificent area. Quite a few of the guests decided to take the always-enticing waterfall hike, which ends up with a well-earned jump into the fresh waters of this primeval river in the midst of Corcovado.

Many more of our guests decided to try the so-named “easier walk” and find out for themselves why we call it that… easier than what? The time goes fast when you are having fun, and our guests soon came back from the various hikes confirming this truth with their broad smiles.

All too soon, we were all gathered in the bar-lounge, a preferred site by our guests. The sun turned red, then purple, and finally the last drizzle of pale colors announced the end of an enchanted day in paradise. Among stories and anecdotes during our traditional recap, our group shared memories of the moments we lived today.
