Manuel Antonio National Park & Drake Bay

Manuel Antonio always brings great memories from childhood. Those improvised excursions that our family planned when I was perhaps six will remain in my mind forever. One of the trips was precisely to this place, ‘Full of monkeys by the sea,’ my father said! I cannot forget how much time it took from my hometown in the Central Valley to this incredibly remote beach; it was forever and we crossed a dozen swampy rivers, dirt roads, banana plantations and railroad bridges to finally arrive to Quepos and later to Manuel Antonio.

The reason to come? The same cause that brought us here today on board the Sea Voyager: this exuberant piece of nature suddenly stopped by a turquoise sea. We came looking for incredibly beautiful beaches with soft sandy bottom and the soothing contact of the waves over relaxed floating people who couldn’t believe this tropical paradise. Our journey brought us here for the magnificent fauna, which includes troops of capuchin monkeys, elusive sloths over the tree-tops, fascinating birds such as the yellow-crowned night-heron and an array of critters for the satisfaction and amusement of our guests.

The old Manuel Antonio did not have any buildings, no hotels or condominiums, no restaurants or street vendors, no foreign accents or dollars as a common currency. The old Manuel Antonio only showed its intense beauty in the face of the monkey, the magnificence of the hard-wood trees or the aroma of the sea. In those days nobody could ever imagine, not even in our wildest dreams, the present development of this precious land. We couldn’t foresee the amazing number of people who come to Manuel Antonio just to observe pretty much of what captivated us as children. Many languages, different nationalities, distant places in this world and people who worship this blessed nature that survives the times and evolves rapidly before our eyes.

Today, our guests on board the Sea Voyager could see Manuel Antonio through the eyes of a child who visited this far away corner of Costa Rica, many years ago for the first time in his life!

After this sensational beginning for our journey, we sailed for several hours to encounter the peaceful waters of Drake Bay. Accompanied by an outstandingly beautiful sunset, our guests enjoyed the unique opportunity to kayak or zodiac ride through these mythical waters once sailed by Sir Francis Drake in his voyages along the coast of Panama and Costa Rica.

As the last sun rays crossed the golden sky, an impressive panorama was fully displayed for the joy of all who contemplated the end of this day and the echoes of the night that wrapped the sky with shadows and stars. Buenas Noches a todos!
