Bona, Estiva, Otoque Islands & the Panama Canal

Exploring Central America onboard the Sea Voyager is an experience that fulfills every taste. And what a better example than today? We woke up anchored close to a group of islands and as soon as the Zodiacs were ready, off we went to survey their shoreline. We found magnificent frigate birds, brown boobies and blue-footed boobies busy in their everyday tasks. We heard the calls of young frigates begging for food, and of males in courtship displays. Brown boobies, perched on trees and roosting on the rocks of Bona and Estiva islands, curiously looked down to our boats as we discovered every corner of the shore. It was a lovely ride, when, once more, we learned about natural history and enjoyed amazing sightings of the wildlife.

In the afternoon we had a different kind of experience, more related to our own history as human beings on this planet, and related to our capacity to design, to create, to transform, to build. We went through the first sets of locks of the Panama Canal. Everybody cheered up when the Panamanian pilot boarded the Sea Voyager to lead us through this feature that has changed the world. A passage in between two oceans, not to divide, but to connect. And to celebrate, Marco, our Hotel manager, prepared a feast of Ceviche and cocktails on the sky deck. Several birds flew along, and again, it was natural history in the hand of human history; hard to separate, and what for? This trip is to enjoy and taste it all!
