Close to Caño Island just outside the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
“We have spotted some kind of marine mammal, we are not sure of what they are yet, but they are just in front of the ship…”
“It is some kind of dolphin, NO wait a minute, whales, pilot whales!”
We could see four or five large individuals and three or four smaller ones. Our Captain began to follow the group and as we drew closer, the eight animals turned towards us and began bow riding! Literally hanging from the railing of the bow, most of us tried to catch a glimpse at the magnificent animals frolicking in the water.
“They have moved to the back!”
Off we went, stomping on the blue carpet, to reach the stern before they left. Who would have imagined they were going to be attracted to the Zodiacs! They approached the Zodiacs, touching them with their heads and sides. After a couple of minutes, they turned around and headed into the sea.
“Who would like to get into a Zodiac for a better look?” The Captain dared to ask…. Without a moment of hesitation, most of us hopped aboard. Our wonderful Zodiac drivers managed to give us great views of the whales … or was it the whales that wanted great views of us …?
