Curu Wildlife Refuge
Bright and early this morning, our restless Expedition Leader woke us up for our first forest trail hikes. We were offered two choices: the bird watching, flat, open-area walk, and the hanging-bridge crossing, dry-forest, mangrove walk. Those of us who chose the second option were greeted by a tide-dependant surprise: the hanging bridge was one foot underwater! Troopers as we are, that didn’t stop us from getting to the other side, where howler monkeys, coatimundis, agoutis, white-throated capuchin monkeys, iguanas, and Jesus-Christ lizards waited for us.
After a well-deserved breakfast, we went back into the seasonally dry forest, where plants must deal with little or no rain for six months and with 10 feet of rain for the other half of the year!
And of course the afternoon couldn’t have been more unique! Kayaking, swimming, there would even be a canopy ride, and good snorkeling.
Nevertheless, it sure has been an unforgettable first day!
