Islas Murcielagos, Costa Rica

We returned to Costa Rican waters this morning and another beautiful sunrise. We dropped anchor in a protected and secluded bay, the ship surrounded by turquoise waters. This morning we could hike to the top of one of the islands that comprise Islas Murcielagos (Bat Islands), and/or snorkel and/or kayak and/or relax on the beach!

The snorkeling was the best of the trip so far, clear waters, thousands and thousands of brightly colored fish and a surprising diversity of corals among the rocky outcroppings on the sea floor. Some of us caught a glimpse of a sea turtle swimming below, and we spent a very pleasant morning here.

During lunch we repositioned the ship towards the mainland and en route we were treated to an acrobatic display by a group of spotted dolphins. After lunch we slipped into a small archipelago of islands and rocky outcroppings, steep cliffs and dramatic scenery, where we again dropped anchor and had a kayak exploration up a small mangrove-lined river, a bird hike and a Zodiac cruise up the same river. Another busy day, but there was more to come, at the end of the day many of us swam from the stern – greatly enjoying the calm waters. Pura Vida.
