Curu Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica

Today started clear and hot as we landed on the expanse of sandy beach at Curu. We offered several walks through the dry tropical forest, including a “kids walk.” Those joining this walk had a decision to make, what shape did they want drawn on the palm of their hand? Here were some of our choices:

As we walked amongst the coconut-lined trails we kept a watch for our chosen shapes in the landscape. The circles were easy, coconuts littered the ground with the perfect circle cut into its husk by hungry variegated squirrels. Parallel lines were waving in the slightest of breezes as bright green ribs on the palm fronds. The mangrove area offered many shapes, some made by the roots and others made by the tangle of roots as shown in the first photo.

When we returned to the beach, we found the low tide had exposed lovely mucky sand that was wonderful to spread all over ourselves. The second photo shows three of our guests enjoying this impromptu mud spa. It also shows several more shapes we were hunting for.

We have exercised all of our senses this past week in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Some of the images, sounds and tastes have inspired our guests to pick up pen and share their impressions. Pura Vida.

The sun goes down as silent as the ocean with no wind,
The moon comes up, the waves crash against the rocks spraying everywhere,
The moon goes down with a splash and crash,
The sun comes up with a quiet breeze and whales breaching,
The sun goes down the final howl of the howler monkey,
and the sun flys away on angel wings.
