Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica
The morning found us just outside Golfito, on the south Pacific part of Costa Rica. We had our first late morning (breakfast was served at 7:00 a.m.) and were offered several activities to choose from: kayaking, walking through a forest trail, and later on, going into town. Those of us who chose the hike, were greeted by the first mosquitoes of the trip and the red clay soils, that by now, we are so familiar with. Kayaking off the stern of the ship was wonderful! Some of us were rewarded with the sight of howler monkeys and were also followed in the river by local dogs… Later this morning we were shuttled into town. It turned out to be quite small, but picturesque and gave us the chance to have some well-deserved ice cream.
We repositioned the ship, sailing for about 45 minutes across the Golfo Dulce or “Sweet Gulf”, to reach the beautiful spot of Casa Orquideas or “Orchid House”. This is a small property owned by a couple of North Americans, Ron and Trudy McAllister, who have literally lived in the middle of nowhere for over twenty years. Their garden is a sight to see! Heliconias, bromelias, orchids, philodendrons, and papaya, sour sop, and mango trees were everywhere! All of these plants and flowers attract many species of butterflies and birds. We had a marvelous time just wandering through the area.
Back on board for recap, cocktail hour and a delicious Costa Rican dinner.
