Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica
We traveled through the night and arrived at Golfito, our first stop in Costa Rica. In the port we had a delicious Costa Rican breakfast, while our vessel was reloading water. Then, before our departure to Caña Blanca, we did a little birding on deck and we spotted a Yellow Crowned Night-Heron, a White Ibis and the interesting Gray-breasted Martin.
Arriving to Caña Blanca, Caroline and Earl Lewis greeted us together with “Penosa,” a German Short-haired Pointer who went with us on one of the hikes. The hammocks, kayaks and a lovely garden awaited us. We divided into groups: one went for a long hike on which they heard the melodies of the Three Wattled Bellbird. Two others went for a short hike in which they followed the song of the Slaty-tailed Trogon and were so pleased to see the male and female of this species plus other varieties of birds.
Returning for lunch, many decided to go back swimming and others on kayaks, since they had being practicing during the morning. After lunch, our Captain sailed in direction to “Casa Orquidea.” Over there, Ron and Trudy McAllister, the owners, greeted us with a big friendly smile that was hard to forget. Their garden, full of different species of plant and flowers, was a great place for birdwatching. We headed off in different directions in the garden with our naturalist guides. They explained to us the different use of the medicinal plants, fruit trees and epiphytic plants. While enjoying the song of Chestnut Mandible Toucans, scarlet-rumped Tanagers and many other birds, the weather changed and the rain began to chase us back to our vessel even though many returned swimming and others on the zodiacs.
On board, after changing our wet clothes, we waited for the delicious Costa Rican dinner and held a lot of expectations for our next day of adventure!
