Casa Orquideas and Rincon, Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica

After sailing during the night, we arrived to Golfito where the ship’s officers arranged our entrance to the country. Once all the paperwork was done, our Captain oriented the Sea Voyager to Casa Orquideas. Everybody was excited to get to Ron and Trudy’s garden. The birdwatchers eagerly began to prepare their gears. As soon as we arrived, Trudy, the owner of Casa Orquideas, was there to give us a warm welcome. The staff divided us in groups and we took different trails. The orchids, heliconias, fruit trees, bromeliads, cactus and many other beautiful plants captivated us. Obviously, the birds were singing as part of the welcome committee. The birders didn’t hesitate to start their day with rare species. Golden-hooded Tanagers, Chestnut-mandible Toucans, Cherry-back Tanagers were giving us a good day until were heard and saw soaring the White Hawk fallowed by two King Vulture. A pair of Scarlet Macaws gave us a nice farewell cause our trip had to continue to Rincon.

During lunchtime, we sailed to Rio Rincon, the very end of Golfo Dulce. After listening a lecture about biodiversity, we were eager to leave for our zodiac cruise, hiking and kayaking. The secondary growth forest and the mangroves were just waiting to show us their marvelous beauty. Yellow-billed cotingas, scarlet macaws, golden-napped woodpeckers, white-necked puffbird, black-hooded antshrike, were the delight of every one, but the roseate spoonbill completed the day. What a good day for birding! We could have continued more but the chef was waiting for us with a delicious Costa Rican buffet for dinner. There’s no better way to end an exiting day of adventure!
