Zamia Biological Reserve is our first outing in Costa Rica. As soon as we arrived a shore we were welcomed by a troop of very active White-faced Capuchin Monkeys that decided to stay with us for almost half of the trail. For a moment it seemed as if they were as curious about us as we were about them. While we were doing some monkey watching others took a walk in the near by town of Golfito. After our morning activities were finished we returned to the Sea Voyager for a well-deserved lunch. After lunch we got the opportunity to hear Nalini Nadkarni, our invited lecture guest from the National Geographic Society. Nalini gave us an update on canopy exploration, and made us aware of how much life is up there. In the afternoon we visited Casa Orquideas Botanical Garden, this beautiful location on the Golfo Dulce area is the inspiration of Ron and Trudy Mackalister; a couple of expatriates who have lived in Costa Rica for the last twenty years. While some decided to look at the different tropical plants others took the challenge of finding birds in the canopy. All were well rewarded either with beautiful heliconias and orchids or with toucans and macaws. We ended the day with sweet memories and perhaps with a little tendency to look up in the trees to find some of the mysterious life hidden on the canopy.
