Los Inocentes, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

At sunrise we arrived to Cuajiniquil, a fishing port in the north of Guanacaste. The rich fishery off the coast makes it a great place for fish, lobster and shrimp. After a short ride on the Zodiacs, we took the bus to Hacienda Los Inocentes at the base of the northernmost volcano of the Guanacaste volcanic range, the Orosi volcano. Formerly a dairy and cattle ranch, today it has turned into a beautiful and isolated place for visitors to enjoy the fun of horseback riding, tractor rides in the savannas, or nice walks in the surroundings of the lodge.

Montezuma Oropendolas greeted us and we took advantage of the great weather on our different activities to visit this unique environment: the tropical dry forest. Though devastated in most of its native extension, it still covers an important portion of the province.

We saw three species of monkeys: mantled howler monkeys, Central American spider monkeys and white-throated capuchins; three species of birds: Toucans, flycatchers and Double striped Thick-Knees; and two species of sloths: Hoffmann’s two toed and Variegated three toed sloths. We came back to the ship and we repositioned to the Bay of Santa Elena where we enjoyed water activities like kayaking, the torpedo blaster and swimming off the stern.
