Islas Murcielagos & Bahia Huevo, Costa Rica

The brilliant Costa Rican morning sun ushered us onto Islas Murcielagos, a set of beautiful islands off the coast of the mainland. With snorkels and flippers in hand we eagerly anticipated a fun-filled morning in the water and ashore. Our island had an amazing variance of hills, crests and valleys. Enthusiastically, we started with a good morning walk up the ridge directly over the beach. The 260-meter climb was steep with loose rocks and dirt amid high grasslands. We first stopped in to pay a visit to the park ranger and about a dozen iguanas. The view on the ridge was spectacular! The shared struggle and toil of our ascension rewarded us with a 360-degree panoramic view of the ocean, island and mainland far off in the distance. Back at the beach, our focus turned to snorkeling. The modest reef attracted an amazing variety of fish, including Spotted Rose Snappers, Guineafowl Puffers, and even Jewel Morays. Brown pelicans and Frigate birds hovered above us searching for food. The cool, clear water provided us with much relief from the hike and sun.

Back on the Sea Voyager, we set a course for pristine Bahia Huevo. On the way, a group of dolphins greeted us with high jumps and loud splashes. Moments later we experienced a beautiful sight! Two Olive Ridley sea turtles sharing each others company! They didn’t seem to mind our presence as we turned around to get a better look. We were soon joined by several other turtles that appeared to be just as curious as we were.

Our afternoon consisted of water-filled adventures. We anchored at Bahia Huevo, a lush undeveloped area. Some guests chose to swim off the stern of the Sea Voyager. Others kayaked through a river amid a dense mangrove thicket, while some still continued to snorkel. A few people rested on a deep sandy beach counting hermit crabs and catching up on their tans. After a stunning sunset and a filling meal, most of us went to bed and dreamt of tomorrows promising adventures in Nicaragua.
