Utilla Honduras And Punta Sal
During breakfast we arrived at the small community on Utilla Island, one of the Bay Islands of Honduras, where we cleared into the country. The morning was dedicated to exploring the town, where strangely enough English is the common language. More aquatic activities were also offered and we delighted in snorkeling and diving the nearby reefs. Unlike Belize there was no vertical wall going to depths measured in the hundreds if not thousands of feet, but there was plenty of coral and colorful sponges for us to gaze upon. Numerous species of fish were also seen, from the brightly colored parrotfish to this camouflaged honeycomb cowfish, Lactophrys polygonia. This fish is a fairly rare sighting, especially as it spends a large amount of time motionless against the backdrop of soft corals.
In the late afternoon we used our Zodiacs and kayaks to explore a very scenic river in the National Park called Punta Sal. The Zodiacs were rewarded with numerous sightings of birds and while the kayakers saw fewer birds all appreciated the silence and tranquility of the river at sunset. Tonight was farewell festivities. It has been a short adventure, but one that has given us a taste of the magic of Belize and Honduras.
