Cuero y Salado and Utila, Honduras
Today we explored both the “reefs and rivers of the Maya World”, and then some! We began our day early at the Cuero y Salado National Park, with kayaks and Zodiacs gliding through mirror like waters. We all headed in different directions in search of wildlife and were delighted to find some groups of Howler monkeys, River Otters, Boat-billed herons and much more. It was a great morning ashore and then we returned aboard for breakfast!
As we ate breakfast we sailed towards Utila, and during the late morning hours we could nap or enjoy a video about the Jaguar, filmed extensively in the forests of Belize we had visited just a day or two ago. We docked in the small town of Utila by lunchtime and had an entire afternoon to explore this little jewel of the Bay Islands of Honduras. We wandered the bustling streets of this scuba diving mecca, some of us spotting a hummingbird feeder that was mobbed by three different species of hummingbirds at once. Some of us ventured out in Zodiacs to snorkel and scuba on some reef, spotting all manner of beautiful fish and some spectacular coral formations. This evening we also had an opportunity to go ashore and sample the island nightlife, with many of us spending some time at Coco Loco, listening to music, drinking rum and coke, and being cooled by a brisk Caribbean breeze. Does it get any better than this?
