Bona Island and The Panama Canal
As we woke up this morning we could admire the beautiful islands of Bona, Otoque and Estiva, and more of that, we could see how rich the bird life is around this islands. We didn’t wait much and as soon as the Zodiacs were in the water everybody prepared for an exploration of the area.
During this time of the year the upswelling in the Golf of Panama creates a perfect environment for sea birds to breed. As we observed the colonies of frigate birds, pelicans and brown boobies we were also amazed by other species such as blue-footed boobies, yellow-crowned night herons and black-crowned night herons.
The day called for an excellent lunch on board as we headed towards the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal. While we waited for the pilot to come on board everybody observed bottlenose dolphins playing around the ship with the beautiful view of the sky line of Panama City, The bridge of Las Americas and the ships entering and exiting the Canal. Our bartender Rolando complemented this moment with a special drink of the day, “The Continental Divide”.
As soon as the pilot joined us we headed towards Miraflores Locks to start our rise in this magnificent engineered creation and we started to understand why the logo of the Canal is Pro mundi Beneficio-For the benefit of the world and the importance of the Panama Canal during its participation on history.
We feel excited and look forward to seeing Barro Colorado tomorrow. After the second set of locks, the crew prepared hot chocolate and we went off to sleep with another smile on our faces. Just another great day!
