San Blas Islands, Hollandaise Keys

The Kuna women use two molas for their blouses, one in front, one in back. Part of the traditional dress involves a gold nose ring and cutting their hair short as a sign that they are available for marriage. Traditional dress is only used by the women, the men in turn use western clothing.

The Kuna women provide important income for the family by selling these molas to tourists who come from all over the world to purchase these famous handmade crafts.

A mola might take two weeks to make, and is sold for the modest price of between $10 to $40.

Their Kuna Yala (“ Land of the Kunas”) is comprised of 365 islands and has a population of 60,000 inhabitants. Other sources of income come from selling their coconuts, plantains and lobsters. The Kuna are a very proud group of people and know the value of their culture. A tourist who might want to take a picture will be asked to pay one dollar.
