The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on January 25, 2017.

After a full day at sea we have reached the second largest island in Cuba, Isle de la Juventud. Even for Cubans this is a remote part of their country and few who do not live here ever get to visit.

We spent our morning exploring the Presidio Modelo, the prison where German, Japanese, and Italian prisoners were interred during WWII. Of course, Fidel Castro had a stint here in the 1950s as well. Just before lunch we stopped in at a government run maternity clinic where high-risk pregnant mothers receive special medical and psychological attention in the latter part of their terms.

Our afternoon was spent investigating the lovely town of Nueva Gerona, including the Centro Escolar to meet young aspiring artists. Walking the streets of this small community was surreal, as the citizens here are just as curious about us as we are in them!
