We enjoyed a morning at sea as we made our journey from the Westfjords to North Iceland. There was some swell along the way, reminding us that Iceland is prone to changes in the weather, even during summer. Once in Siglufjordur, we were greeted by the lovely herring girls. They demonstrated the proper way to cure herring for export, a cultural nod to the mid-20th century Herring Adventure in Siglufjordur that saw this small fishing village become the Klondike of the Atlantic.
In the afternoon, we took a stroll around town before heading back on board to move east to Husavik. On the way, we received a visit from one of Iceland’s most renowned singer-songwriters, Svavar Knutur, who told us all about the Icelandic seasons, its history, and the culture. With his beautiful melodies in mind, we fell asleep waiting for tomorrow’s adventure.
