Up before dawn and into the skiffs we all go, headed out to Yanayacu Creek to see what wildlife the day would bring. The three boats went their separate ways, and while one of the boats found pink river dolphins, the boat that I was on found a southern tamandua (South American lesser anteater)! What a treat!
After a scrumptious breakfast we went to see a female shaman named Carola who trained with her grandfather for eight years, learning all about the medicinal values of plants found locally here in the Upper Amazon. She serves nine different communities in this area and treats everything from diabetes to childbirth!
Later this afternoon, we again went up the Yanayacu River, this time we were treated to brown-throated three-toed sloths, a spectacled owl, and the endemic Isabel’s saki monkey. What a wildlife-rich day we all enjoyed!
