Science at Sea: Studying Svalbard’s Microbial Diversity

Biologist and Visiting Scientist Haley DeHart has spent three years studying environmental DNA on voyages to Svalbard, East Greenland and Iceland aboard the National Geographic Resolution to better understand the Arctic’s microbial diversity. With support from the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic (LEX-NG) Fund, she uses advanced technology in the field and a fully equipped molecular laboratory in the ship’s Science Hub to process samples, producing results in real time that she can share with guests during onboard talks. In this video, follow DeHart’s research—from collecting environmental DNA by Zodiac to analyzing her findings on board—and see how the LEX-NG Fund helps make this research happen.
