Gidin Jaad (Dee Dee) Crosby

Gidin Jaad Koniihl, a member of the Naa'yuuans Xaaydaga clan, was born and raised in the village of Skidegate, Haida Gwaii. Her brother is Kilslaay SGiidagiids, Chief Skidegate, Sidney Gordon Crosby, and her grandfather was Kilslaay K'uuna, Chief Skedans, James Wilson. Gidin Jaad enjoys sharing the rich cultural knowledge and history passed down through her kuuniisii, or ancestors. Among the greatest gifts from her grandparents was the importance of welcoming those who visit Haida Gwaii. Joining expeditions gives her the opportunity to meet people from many walks of life, especially those who value learning and culture.

An accomplished traditional Haida singer and dancer, Gidin Jaad has participated in many feasts and potlatches. She supports the ongoing revitalization of the Haida language through the Skidegate Haida Immersion Program and values the time she spends learning from Haida Elders. As a nanaay, or grandmother, she is committed to passing on her knowledge and traditional values to future generations.

Gidin Jaad has served for many years as a respected Haida Gwaii Watchman in Gwaii Haanas, sharing the experience with her husband and grandchildren. Growing up with the freedom to wander the beaches and forests of her home continues to shape her perspective and the joy she finds in introducing others to Gwaii Haanas, hoping they leave with the same lasting connection to this remarkable place.
