Jayden O'Neill

Jayden is a video journalist, photographer and former marine biologist from Australia's east coast. His career has combined scientific fieldwork, expedition travel and visual storytelling, with a focus on helping audiences better understand the environments and communities he documents.

He began his professional career as a fisheries biologist off Vancouver Island in Canada before returning to Australia, where he spent five years working in marine science. During this time, his work took him to some of the most remote regions of the globe, from the subantarctic waters surrounding Heard and McDonald Islands to the Coral Sea south of Papua New Guinea. These experiences provided firsthand exposure to diverse marine ecosystems and the challenges involved in studying and managing them.

While working in the field, Jayden became increasingly interested in photography and filmmaking as tools for communicating science. He recognized the potential of visual media to reach broader audiences and inspire a deeper appreciation for the places and species being studied. This led him to transition from marine biology into journalism and documentary production, drawing on his scientific background to tell stories about wildlife, conservation and remote environments.

Today, Jayden lives in Australia's Northern Territory, where he works as a freelance cinematographer, producer and journalist for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Much of his work focuses on the relationships between First Nations Australians and the environment, exploring how culture, history and ecology intersect across the Australian landscape.
