Yann Herrera

Yann Herrera Fuchs is a Naturalist and Undersea Specialist who has worked with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions since 2020. Raised primarily in Mexico City, he has also lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia and Tasmania, building experience across a range of marine environments.

Yann began his career as a technician with the World Wildlife Fund in Baja California, working alongside fishing communities to develop alternative fishing gear aimed at reducing bycatch of protected species, including the critically endangered vaquita. This work grounded his long-term focus on applied conservation and collaboration with coastal communities.

In 2018, Yann was awarded a scholarship from the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society in partnership with Rolex. During this year-long program, he gained experience across diverse underwater projects, from mapping submerged cave systems to collecting sponge samples along the Antarctic Peninsula.

Yann earned a Ph.D. from the University of Tasmania in 2025, where his research examined the impacts of temperature and climate change on temperate and tropical reef ecosystems. His current work includes research on Baja California kelp forests and ongoing collaboration with small-scale fishing communities to monitor reef populations.

As a Naturalist and Undersea Specialist, Yann has guided expeditions in regions including Alaska, Baja California and New Zealand, supporting guest engagement through underwater exploration and science-based interpretation.
