Barro Colorado Island and Panama Rainforest Discovery Center

Jan 21, 2018 - National Geographic Quest

National Geographic Quest arrived at the inner side of Gatun Lake where, after anchor in front of Barro Colorado Island, preparations began to visit not only the island but also the area of Gamboa where the Discovery Center is located.

The first is an island managed by the Smithsonian Institute, which is considered one of the most important tropical research center in Panama and the region. The second place visited was the Discovery Center, an area managed by NGOs that work in the fields of conservation and environmental education in the limits of the National Park.

Maguil Céspedes

Naturalist

Although Maguil was born in San Jose, he was raised in the countryside of Costa Rica, and it was this experience that provided him with a deep knowledge of and a profound love for the rural life of Central America.  It was this passion for nature that led Maguil to study biology at the University of Costa Rica, where he received his master’s degree in 2002. His thesis explored the genetic structure of big leaf mahogany, an endangered species of tree that is commercially extinct in much of Central America.
