Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve

May 22, 2018 - National Geographic Quest

Our second day finds us in one of the most pristine wilderness areas of the world: Glacier Bay National Park. This 3.3 million acre wilderness is also designated as a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage site for the unique opportunity to study and observe ecological succession in the wake of rapid and modern glacial recession, beginning around 250 years ago. With a National Park Service Ranger and Huna Tlingit Cultural Interpreter as our guides, we explore this bay and learn about its story as a home, and as a homeland.

About the Author

Sarah Keefer

Naturalist

Sarah’s fondest memories of nature and wildlife encounters are ones she has shared with friends- especially when those experiences involve birding on the bow of a ship! She is captivated by the wonders of the natural world, and it was the lure of expansive wilderness and exotic destinations that inspired her to study Wildlife Biology at both the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Hawaii Honolulu. First partial to mammalian studies, it wasn’t until her first season as a field naturalist in Southeast Alaska that she truly appreciated the value of watching birds, and what they could teach us about patience, integrity and hope.

Jim was born in rural New England where he quickly developed an appreciation for the outdoors and a love of exploration.  Four years with the U.S. Navy further enhanced his appetite for travel. Always interested in the visual arts, he studied Television at Boston University and Northeast College of Communications, landing his first job in the industry working as an editor at a Boston television station. His wanderlust drew him to a job with two major cruise lines; installing and managing broadcast centers onboard a total of over a dozen ships. He has since moved on to specialize in expedition travel and wildlife productions.
