Sisimiut, Greenland

Aug 09, 2018 - National Geographic Explorer

In the morning, National Geographic Explorer arrived in the picturesque coastal town of Sisimiut, Greenland’s second-largest municipality with about 6,000 inhabitants. After breakfast, we went ashore to explore the town while some of our group went on a hike. We reconvened for a visit to the museum and souvenir shopping.

After lunch, a local paddler gave a demonstration of kayak rolling. The community of Sisimiut has an active kayaking club and often hosts the Greenland National Kayak Competition. Kayak rolling, a part of the sport that evolved from a survival skill, is an important aspect of the competition.

As we sailed across Baffin Bay and made our way toward Arctic Canada, we received important briefings about travel in the Arctic and Zodiac use, followed by an informative and inspiring presentation on photography by our photo instructor, Doug Gould. The day wrapped up with Captain Aaron Wood’s welcome cocktail reception followed by a delicious dinner—during which we had our first large iceberg sighting. Beautiful!
