Northward in the Pacific

Mar 27, 2019 - National Geographic Venture

It was all sea today aboard National Geographic Venture. And one we thought best to spend lightly, where a tour of the vessel or thumbing through one’s photos might be the closest to exertion we’d come. The wildlife in the area had a different plan.

What this day actually amounted to was one of encountering humpbacks before breakfast, birds at all hours of daylight, and several sessions of blue whale spotting. Today was, in short, not anything like we expected, and we are all the better for it.

Mike learned early on that the best way to escape Ohio was to become a marine biologist.  During college at Wittenberg University he attended a semester at Duke University's Marine Lab — that time only confirmed his love for all things oceanic and maritime.  After graduation, Mike promptly moved to Catalina Island in California where he taught marine biology to school kids.  Since 1999, Mike has been working and traveling chasing his three loves: marine critters, photography, and birds.
