Fernandina Island, Punta Vicente Roca

Jul 08, 2019 - National Geographic Endeavour II

Today National Geographic Endeavour II is visiting Fernandina Island, where we had one of the best encounters with marine iguanas. There are everywhere, sneezing, resting, basking under the morning sun—this place is amazing! Sea lions and flightless cormorants were in the area too, giving us the perfect position for taking pictures. After visiting Fernandina Island, it was time to go to explore the underwater world of this place. We lost the count of the sea turtles around us! It was an exceptional morning!

Then we headed to Isabela Island, where we did a Zodiac ride exploring the great geological formations and fauna of the area. Our captain and crew raised anchor and took us out to visit the equatorial line! Pirates arrived to the sky deck to entertain us during wine testing. From sunrise to sunset: perfection aboard National Geographic Endeavour II!

About the Author

Ixora Berdonces

Naturalist

Ixora was born in the Galapagos Islands, back when the streets were made of sand and gravel. Void of TV and tablets, her childhood friends and pristine natural surroundings made for an inspiring upbringing. She was always drawn to the ocean and her local environment, with her first adventures taking place underwater, in mangrove estuaries, and perched in treetops. Not surprisingly, she was scuba diving before the age of 12 and led her first diving trips as a Dive Master in the Galapagos Marine Reserve when she was 18.

About the Photographer

Africa Berdonces

Naturalist

Africa grew up in the Galápagos Islands where she spent her childhood exploring with her family, surrounded by exquisite nature. She took her first scuba diving lesson with her father off the coast of Sombrero Chino Island when she was just 12 years old. That first dive opened up a new and unexplored part of the natural world to her. Africa became enchanted by local marine life and went on to become a divemaster, working as both a dive guide and naturalist in her beloved islands.
