Friday Harbor and Jones Island

Sep 23, 2019 - National Geographic Venture

Shortly after docking at Friday Harbor, we set off exploring San Juan Island. Some of us visited an organic farm, the Whale Museum, and local businesses like a bookstore, a gallery, or a coffee shop. A group of us toured sites on the far side of the island, including Lime Kiln and English Camp. We spent the afternoon at nearby Jones Island, where we walked on trails through very different habitats – drier areas with Garry oaks and beautiful madrone trees, and damper areas with tall Douglas firs and deep green mosses.

Berit Solstad

Naturalist

Berit grew up on the rocky shores of Marblehead, Massachusetts. In the tidal cove behind her family’s home she found horseshoe crabs, eels, and feeding frenzies of fishes and birds. Low tides exposed clam flats, crabs, mussels, and snails. She explored this marine environment through changing tides and seasons, nurturing a love of natural history and marine biology.
