Today the second major phase of our expedition began with our arrival at the magnificent island of South Georgia. The day was a perfect introduction to this amazing place, allowing us to experience a wide range of the weather, wildlife, and scenery that the island has to offer.
In the morning we set out on Zodiacs under the towering cliffs and jagged peaks in Larsen Harbor, after which we sailed along the face of the glacier in the back of Drygalski Fjord. Amid the wild weather, the mountains appeared and disappeared as shreds of storm blew through.
By early afternoon we were surrounded by the lower relief of Cooper Bay, under bright sunshine and calm winds, with a choice of hiking or exploring with the Zodiacs to see macaroni penguins, Antarctic fur seals, and southern elephant seals—and it was a mission well-accomplished!
