Our second day at sea started slowly, with a late morning update, and later breakfast. The National Geographic Orion was making good progress toward our next destination, the Falkland Islands, and specifically the Port of Stanley. We would be spending several days in the Falklands, exploring this group of islands that sit in the southern Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of Argentina. This would be our last stop before returning to Ushuaia, and then home.
The day was filled with different activities, lectures, photo collecting and critiquing, and a special cocktail party before dinner. The first lecture was about “Living and Working in Antarctica,” then one on the “Wildlife of the Falkland Islands” and later in the afternoon a talk was given by Rod entitled “When Things Go Wrong in Antarctica… The Story of an Accidental Overwintering.” And finally, we had the critiquing of guests’ photos by the photo team, which seemed to be enjoyed by all in attendance.
There was, however, one more event that took place in mid-morning, a Fruhschoppen – some bratwurst, beer and soup served on the rear deck of the National Geographic Orion. This snack was enjoyed by all, and one of many special things the hotel staff has done to enhance our voyage!
Last, but not least, there was the evening cocktail party with a special presentation about Lindblad and National Geographic’s “Pristine Seas” initiative, promoting setting aside large areas of our planet’s oceans to protect them from overfishing, and to create productive fish restocking areas! A very important cause that on some level we can all help with!
Finally, it was time for another great dining experience, followed by part three of the series “Chasing Shackleton,” and then a good night’s sleep to prepare for our time in Stanley tomorrow.
