Right Whale Bay, South Georgia

Our transit from the Falklands complete, we arrived at South Georgia in the early morning as the sun rose like a smear of lipstick over the peaks surrounding this sheltered bay. Zodiacs were soon launched and we set off to explore the wildlife riches that awaited us. The beaches were carpeted with young Antarctic fur seals, screaming and bleating, and playing and wrestling as if they formed a single mat of fur that covered the entire beach like upholstery on a sofa. Many more of these youngsters swam out to investigate our boats, twisting their bodies as they climbed over one another for a closer view, then rushing away when they felt their courage slipping. And the seal pups were not alone: gaudy king penguins also surrounded our boats, eyeing us from a more discrete distance while on shore we could make out the trumpets and whistles of a bustling penguin colony. We have undoubtedly had a fantastic introduction to this magnificent island, and it’s not even breakfast time yet!
