Alborán Sea
Today was a day spent entirely at sea and it provided an opportunity to absorb the many experiences of our excursions ashore in Venice, Croatia, Greece, Malta, Sicily and Menorca as well as to prepare for the days ahead in Spain. We used the time to hear lectures about the Moorish influence in Spain which gave rise to the magnificent Alhambra which we will visit tomorrow. We also heard talks about the world of Islam then and now, about the Barbary Pirates and about the Oceanography of the Mediterranean Sea. In the afternoon, we heard a third talk by Robert MacNeil, our distinguished guest lecturer on this voyage. Robert MacNeil is well known to us all, and is travelling aboard Endeavour with his wife, Donna, on our voyage from Venice to Seville. This is not their first time aboard the ship and they are wonderful shipmates, freely sharing the stories of an incredible life spent at the height of the profession of Journalism. Robert MacNeil has retired from journalism now and has become a very successful novelist. He has, for the past two weeks spoken on both professions, how they are related and how they differ. This afternoon he discussed the American language, its evolution, its adaptability and its charm. Travelling with the MacNeils has added greatly to the overall experience of this very memorable voyage and has enriched our lives aboard ship and on our many excursions ashore.
