Bartolome & Santiago Island
The question…
Hi, my name is Luis but everyone has called me Lucho ever since I first came to work on board the Polaris. I am a naturalist guide in the Galapagos and I am very proud of my job. It was early in the morning and my legs were already taking me on a walk on an island called Bartolome. I am a little embarrassed to confess that my body was walking, but it took a little longer than usual today for my mind to join it! For some unknown reason, my mind decided to stay in some sort of limbo where I had trouble sorting out fantasies from reality. I am sure I don’t have to go any further with explanations, since I know that everyone of you has been there, at least once. I was walking along the path, accompanied by my group of guests, looking out for things that might be of interest to them for me to explain when, without even noticing, we were already at the top of Bartolome. The view was great, and the soft early breeze was slowly drying the few drops of sweat that the hike up had formed on our foreheads. Everyone was looking around either to take pictures or just to create a mental print of the view when somebody asked the question … aren’t you lucky? Without even waiting for my answer, she quickly turned back and kept taking pictures. Almost immediately, I realized that she was not even waiting for my answer because she already knew it. Of course I am lucky! I do not know why, but the question hit my inner being with the same strength that a hammer would if hitting my head (not that I have ever experienced this literally!) From that moment on, it has seemed like my body was floating in a sea of fantasies. Thousands of thoughts flashed through my mind at incredible speed. Memories of people that I had met, places that I had been and experiences that I had had. I am lucky to have gotten to know people that would enrich my life with every single day that passes. I am lucky to be in a place like this, where everything appears to be a fantasy, but is reality. And the best of all, I am lucky to experience things like the one that just happened today, because it simply reminds me of how lucky I am. So the next time that somebody asks me if I am lucky, I guess I won’t answer, I will just smile…
