At Sea--25°38’s, 8°38’w

Endeavour is sailing in the South Atlantic Gyre and the sea is the deep blue that one only finds far from land. Today is a very special one aboard Endeavour because we are celebrating the 65th birthday of a true blue water sailor, Captain Karl Ulrich Lampe. Captain Lampe is descended from a long line of seafarers. As far back as he can remember the men in his family have been ship’s Captains. Captain Lampe was born and raised in Oldenburg, Germany, where he still lives with his wife Sabine. They have three daughters, all of whom are also seafarers. He first went to sea in 1958 as a deck boy on the training ship Rothenstein, a cargo ship operated by North German Lloyd, on a voyage to Japan. Since then he has worked all over the world on cargo ships and, beginning in 1968, on passenger ships. He first sailed aboard the liner, Bremen, on the run from Bremerhaven to New York. In 1973 he began working on cruise ships and since 1987 has been master of several expedition ships. He has been sailing as master of Endeavour since 2000.

Captain Lampe is both admired and respected by his shipmates. He is generally regarded as an able and professional man with a lifetime of experience at sea. The officers, crew and staff of Endeavour know him as a strong leader who is also very easy to know. Our guests know him as a charming and congenial Captain who always has their safety and enjoyment foremost in his mind. Captain Lampe is a man or humor, compassion and utmost integrity. It is indeed a pleasure for us all to sail with him and we all join in wishing him a very Happy Birthday.
