South Atlantic Ocean

As we steadily climb northward up the globe, the evenings end a little sooner, the attire on deck becomes a little briefer, and the fine pastime of sunset watching becomes a lot more popular. Today we officially entered into the Tropics, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5 degrees S latitude) late in the morning. After spending more than a fortnight in the blustery conditions further south, the tropical waters surrounding us are of a refreshingly calmer variety. The warmer temperatures come with a trade-off, however, as the marine life around us is conspicuously absent. The colder (and hence, more biologically productive) waters down south were busy with albatrosses, petrels, and whales while here we are lucky to spy any birds at all. Of course, that’s all part of what makes this journey interesting, and you wouldn’t want too many seabirds distracting you from watching a sunset with a cocktail in your hand.
