Cape Horn

The Endeavour experienced a relatively smooth crossing of the infamous Drake Passage. Although we had a swell from the north and moderate winds our ship remained stable and comfortable. By mid afternoon we could see the outline of the islands at the “end of the earth”. Cape Horn defines the very southern end of South America. It also marks the end of the mighty Andes, which stretch nearly the length of the continent. It is the turning point for ships passing between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

For those of us aboard the Endeavour it marks more than just the completion of the crossing of the Drake. We are nearing the end of our remarkable voyage. We’ve put more than 2200 miles beneath our keel. We’ve been treated to all the marvels and magic of the white continent. The astonishing abundance of wildlife captured our focus. The myriad shapes of ice sculptures changed color and hue as we passed. We’ve saturated our senses, marveled at the grandeur, and tasted that which makes Antarctica so unique. As we pack our bags we also pack away our memories but perhaps our paths will one day bring us south once more to the white continent.
