Runde, Norway

Today at Runde the sights and sounds of seabirds enveloped everyone in the Zodiacs, while being gently rocked back and forth by the incoming swell.

I was searching along the rock bottom when this vibrant red edible crab (Cancer pagurus) crossed my path. Distinguishing characteristics include a piecrust margin along the fringe of its carapace, massive black-tipped chelipeds and five small blunt teeth on the rim of the carapace between the eyes. This species is the most commercially important crab species of Western Europe and can be found in the mid-tide levels up to depths of 100 meters. The females of the species will migrate inshore during late spring to molt and mate after which they will move into deeper water.
