Floreana Island
Good morning life! It was a great beginning to see clear skies and the beautiful view of Devil’s Crown at the distance. After our visit to Post Office Barrel - where the old sailors’ tradition was given life again – we spent some time at La Loberia. Two young sea lions were having a lot of fun performing summersaults and pirouettes all around the Zodiacs, trying to get our attention; they certainly got it, I must add! Any trace of possible somnolence up to that moment disappeared instantly after such a show!
Our next stop was Champion Island for the first snorkeling of the day. It was an outstanding site! We had the company of several white tip reef sharks, spotted eagle rays and no less than at least two dozen, super-playful young sea lions. It was hilarious to see the reaction of guests when the sea lions approached them at full speed and turned around at the last second.
Later in the morning, we came back to the same Island of Champion with the Zodiacs to do some bird watching. We found at least four individuals of the most difficult species found in this Island, the Floreana mockingbird. It was also gratifying to see that the prickly pear cacti are still in blossom, with so many flowers and fruits.
The afternoon brought another set of fortunate events. We headed for our second snorkeling experience of the day at Devil’s Crown. We were surrounded by black tip sharks and white tip sharks.
In the meantime at a nearby location, the kayakers were observing cattle egrets flying back to their nesting areas, the majority located on top of the mangrove trees. Once done with our snorkeling and kayaking, we headed to Punta Cormoránt to visit a hyper saline lagoon, where we easily counted at least thirty five greater flamingos. All of them were looking good and healthy, mostly because of the abundant food found there.
This day has been very fulfilling to all of us!
