Santiago Island
What a wonderful day we all had today! Early in the morning, we started with a walk through one of the better known landscapes in the archipelago, the world-famous pinnacle rock of the tiny islet of Bartolome. We then started with water activities from a picturesque orange beach after our well-deserved breakfast. The weather was sunny and breezy. It couldn't get better than this, we thought, but then appeared sea-lions, birds, sharks and plants which were all there for our amusement (or so it seemed).
In the afternoon, the Polaris repositioned to Puerto Egas located on the western coast on the island of James, or Santiago as it is also known. Once we dropped anchor, we deployed our Zodiacs, and the eager snorkelers ran for their gear and immersed themselves in the Galápagos marine world for one last time before taking the afternoon nature walk at a faster pace. Those who preferred to spend the afternoon at a more leisurely pace on the same walk got to do just that, with ample time and opportunity for photography. It was here that this picture was taken, on top of a lava flow, solidified in time and caressed by the waves with exquisite sound. The sun on our backs and breeze on our faces as we silently remembered and shared how wonderful this place is: the “Enchanted Islands.”
Back on board, we all shared our highlights of the entire expedition, though some of us admitted to forgetting some days and loosing track of time due to the amount of options that were taken. That is a great comment when on vacation!
It has come to a physical end. Our expedition took us to our last walk in this breathtaking paradise, yet will also remain an everlasting experience.
We say good bye, and come back soon - now counting on new friends.
