Punta Suarez, Española Island

Today we started by snorkeling among tropical fish and strolling a wonderful white beach covered in sea lions. Later on, we went hiking amongst courting and nesting blue-footed boobies and Nazca boobies, as well as Española lava lizards and red-and-black marine iguanas…

This sounds like some kind of crazy wildlife dream – but it is real! A wildlife high in the Galápagos Islands is unlike anything else on Earth! The tides were way higher than usual, due to the new moon conditions, and the landing spots were reduced so much that the wildlife specimens were arguing for their little niches. We had to practically fight our way through, our naturalists gently coaxing sea lions and marine iguanas away from the paths.

The biggest highlight of all, however, was the unexpected sighting of several waved albatrosses coming in to nest – a little early in the season. It was so great to see these magnificent birds return, after many months away! We have missed them, and took advantage of their reappearance to rejoice another unforgettable trip through the Galápagos Archipelago.
