Floreana Island

It is 5:45 in the morning, and I just woke up fifteen minutes ago to get ready to make the daily wake up call. One might think that this is not a big deal, but to me, it is! What I am about to say in that call could change people’s life. Before I did the call, I stood up by the balcony located on the main corridor. I was observing for a few minutes the horizon, scanning for something that would justify me waking people up at six in the morning. Before I finished my thought, I saw the first ray of light breaking through the clouds at the horizon. That was it! That was all I needed to inspire and encourage people through my call to leave their warm and comfortable beds, and to pursue what it seemed for them still at that time, a dream.

I asked them to join us in an adventure, one that would transport us to the past, centuries of years, perhaps. It was in the late 1700s when buccaneers and whalers were navigating around these waters, just like we are doing it today. Their main objective was a bit different, though. They were here to hunt the whales down, and for that, they spent several years on board of those ships without seeing their families. It was then when the first post office service was erected in this part of the pacific, and the only thought to send a letter to their families once in a while took them a long way.

We are here now to honor this ancient tradition and to continue the long ago established mail system. The letters had transformed into postcards, and the goal, pure fun!

Our later activities, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and the walk were just another reason for me to wake everybody up.

By the end of the day, there wasn’t a single face of disappointment, and I think that would be my inspiration for my next wake up call…
