Floreana Island
There is no doubt that we are in a special place; an area where animals are not afraid of humans…that sounds almost like a fairytale!
Fortunately, such a place exists and is a piece of land located in the middle of nowhere known as Galápagos.
Today we arrived at perhaps the most mysterious island within the archipelago. Its intricate human history makes it even richer and more flavorful than any of the other islands that, up until now, have amazed us with their incredible flora and fauna.
It is precisely the same place that was chosen by buccaneers and whalers that we used for our landing this morning. Our goal was to continue with the ancient tradition created back in the late seventeen hundreds, but with a slight twist; this time our guests would bring back postcards from the post office barrel describing happy moments and precious sightings from the Galápagos.
As the sun was getting brighter, the idea of snorkeling sounded even more appealing; after an invigorating breakfast, we headed to Champion Island to encounter the rich marine life that makes this small island very famous.
Sea lions were everywhere and delighted us with their body twisting and ballet-like movements underwater.
The other side of Floreana Island happens to have a small lagoon that was explored fully during our afternoon outing. Flamingoes as well as other shore birds are found commonly almost all year around feeding on its brackish waters. The fearlessness of animals in the Galápagos is a myth among the ones who has never set foot on the islands, but for the lucky ones like us, this is not longer the case. A flamingo feeding just a few feet away from us; sea lions blowing bubbles right up in your snorkeling mask; birds sitting on top of your camera lenses; that is the type of fearless that I am talking about! And yes indeed, it does still sounds like a fairytale…
