Urbina Bay & Punta Moreno, Southern Isabela
Once again we started the day with calm seas; without any difficulties, we dropped anchor at Urbina Bay for our morning visit. Upon arrival we found the track left by a giant tortoise but unfortunately, even though we looked for it everywhere, we couldn’t find it.
The land iguanas were out of their burrows warming up with the morning sun, while numerous finches escorted us along the path. Many flowers in different species of plants showed us what an authentic and different micro-ecosystem this really is. While the majority of the islands have deciduous plants at the coastline, a dense layer of foliated plants, fully in blossom are still present here.
After the hike, a well deserved dip in the ocean gave us the ultimate relaxation. When we returned back to the ship, our minds (at least mine) were focused on the extraordinary lunch that waited to be consumed by the hungry explorers. While still in the middle of lunch, a very big whale decided to join us gliding along the ship. What a fantastic view and feeling to have a whale outside the dining room windows traveling with us! We never regretted the interruption and off we went to the outer deck for a better look.
In the afternoon we were exploring Punta Moreno, a very hostile but beautiful lava field that unites the two southernmost volcanoes of this huge island of Isabela. Overwhelming as it is, this place refilled us with awe and energy for us to keep going.
When standing on the lava flow, admiring the three hundred and sixty degrees view full of lava, made it possible for us to understand the mighty nature of this place. It made us realize also how fragile we are, but at the same time, we were filled with this empowering sensation when we allowed the floating energy of the Galápagos fill our inner selves.
