Champion and Floreana Islands

Today was a day filled with more explorations here on this family voyage in the Galápagos. For some of us, we participated in the ancient tradition of dropping off postcards at Post Office Bay on Floreana Island. Many of the younger explorers wrote postcards to themselves detailing their trip, and we wonder when and how it shall arrive home. Others took to the water to explore more of the undersea world. Off tiny Floreana Island, we were rewarded with abundant schools of various fishes, but the highlight for sure was the sea lions. Many of us participated in the underwater ballet with these graceful creatures. It was hard to tell who was having the most fun: the sea lions playing with us, or the kids flopping around in imitation of them.

In the afternoon, we had more beach time, where once again the resident sea lions entertained us. Many were just lounging on the beach, allowing for close examination. Our final excursion was past a lagoon filled with feeding and nesting flamingoes, to a perfect white sand beach. Here we were all free to be kids and explore whatever interested us, whether it was the abundant stingrays in the shallows, the vibrant sally lightfoot crabs on the rocks, or just to sit in the powdery sand and write our name. These are the observations from my naturalist trained eyes, but from the perspective of a different generation, it may read as the following:

The sky was overcast
But the day was flipped
The promise of a sea lion colony
Woke people at six in the morning
Then deep water snorkeling around Champion Island
Shark, turtles, sea lions, fish everywhere
A walk on a beautiful green beach followed lunch
Along with a walk on a cinder trail
With the highlight of pink flamingoes
A delicious barbeque ended everyone’s day
On the skydeck while watching the stars

No matter whose eyes it was seen through, it certainly was another fantastic day on this family expedition.
